Chapter 5Bank Reconciliation Statement
BRS explains why the cash book's bank balance ≠ passbook balance.
1. Meaning
A statement prepared to reconcile the bank column of the cash book with the bank passbook (bank statement).
Debit balance in cash book = credit balance in passbook (favourable).
2. Causes of Difference
| Cause | Recorded in |
|---|---|
| Cheques issued but not presented | cash book only |
| Cheques deposited but not collected | cash book only |
| Bank charges / interest debited | passbook only |
| Interest / dividend credited by bank | passbook only |
| Direct deposits by customers | passbook only |
| Errors | either book |
3. Method
- Start with one balance (e.g. cash book Dr).
- Add items that made the other balance higher.
- Subtract items that made it lower.
- Result = other book's balance.
Cash book ₹10 000; cheque issued ₹2 000 not presented → add: passbook ₹12 000.
4. Key Points
- Prepare BRS periodically.
- Overdraft: reverse the logic.
- Errors detected help correct records.
- Adjusted cash book method also used.
Remember: Causes | add/subtract rule | overdraft reverses
