Chapter 4Introduction to Problem Solving
Analyse → Algorithm → Code → Test & Debug.
1. Steps
- Analyse the problem (inputs, outputs).
- Develop an algorithm.
- Code it in a language.
- Test and debug.
2. Representing Algorithms
- Flowchart: oval (start/stop), parallelogram (I/O), rectangle (process), diamond (decision), arrows.
- Pseudocode: English-like steps (INPUT, COMPUTE, PRINT, IF, WHILE).
3. Flow of Control
Sequence
steps one after another.
Selection
choose based on a condition (if-else).
Repetition
loop until a condition fails.
Algorithm verification: dry run with sample inputs.
4. Decomposition
Break a complex problem into smaller sub-problems that can be solved independently.
5. Key Points
- An algorithm must be finite and unambiguous.
- Comparing algorithms: time and space.
- Syntax errors vs logical errors.
- Pseudocode is not executable.
Remember: 4 steps | flowchart symbols | sequence, selection, repetition
