Chapter 7Motion

Three equations describe uniformly accelerated motion.

1. Describing Motion

  • Distance (scalar) vs displacement (vector, shortest path)
  • Speed = distance/time; velocity = displacement/time
  • Average velocity (uniform acceleration) =u+v2= \dfrac{u + v}{2}
  • Acceleration a=v−uta = \dfrac{v - u}{t} (m/s²); negative = retardation
  • Uniform circular motion: speed constant, velocity changes (direction) → accelerated; v=2πrtv = \dfrac{2\pi r}{t}

2. Equations of Motion

v=u+atv = u + at
s=ut+12at2s = ut + \dfrac{1}{2}at^2
v2−u2=2asv^2 - u^2 = 2as

Graphs

  • Distance–time: slope = speed
  • Velocity–time: slope = acceleration; area = displacement
  • Horizontal v–t line = uniform velocity

3. Key Points to Remember

  • Displacement can be zero though distance isn't.
  • Velocity has direction.
  • a = (v − u)/t.
  • Area under v–t graph = displacement.
  • Circular motion is accelerated.
  • Learn the 3 equations of motion.

Remember: v = u + at | s = ut + ½at² | v² − u² = 2as
