If a fresh plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, what will happen to it?
- A.Endosmosis will occur, causing the cell to swell.
- B.Plasmolysis will occur, causing the protoplasm to shrink away from the cell wall.Correct answer
- C.The cell will burst due to excess water entry.
- D.No change will take place in the cell.
Solution
In a hypertonic solution (higher solute concentration outside), water moves out of the plant cell by osmosis (exosmosis). This causes the contents of the cell to shrink away from the cell wall, a process known as plasmolysis.
