medium · MCQ · Q-0AD358

A uniform rod of length LL and mass MM is pivoted freely at one end and hangs vertically. It is displaced slightly and released. The angular velocity of the rod when it passes through the bottom-most position is:

  1. A.3gL\sqrt{\frac{3g}{L}}Correct answer
  2. B.6gL\sqrt{\frac{6g}{L}}
  3. C.2g3L\sqrt{\frac{2g}{3L}}
  4. D.gL\sqrt{\frac{g}{L}}

Solution

By conservation of mechanical energy, loss in potential energy = gain in rotational kinetic energy. The center of mass falls by a height h=L/2h = L/2. Thus, Mg(L/2)=12Iω2Mg(L/2) = \frac{1}{2} I \omega^2. For a rod pivoted at one end, I=13ML2I = \frac{1}{3}ML^2. Substituting this: MgL2=12(13ML2)ω2  ⟹  gL=13L2ω2  ⟹  ω=3gLMg \frac{L}{2} = \frac{1}{2} \left(\frac{1}{3}ML^2\right) \omega^2 \implies gL = \frac{1}{3}L^2 \omega^2 \implies \omega = \sqrt{\frac{3g}{L}}.
