If one zero of the quadratic polynomial p(x)=4x2−8kx−9p(x) = 4x^2 - 8kx - 9 is negative of the other, then the value of kk is:

  1. A.0Correct answer
  2. B.-1
  3. C.1
  4. D.2

Solution

Let the zeroes be α\alpha and −α-\alpha. The sum of zeroes is α+(−α)=0\alpha + (-\alpha) = 0. For a quadratic polynomial ax2+bx+cax^2 + bx + c, the sum of zeroes is −b/a-b/a. Therefore, −(−8k)/4=0-(-8k)/4 = 0, which gives 2k=02k = 0, so k=0k = 0.
