How does the plant hormone auxin cause a shoot to bend towards a unidirectional source of light?
Practice question from Control and Coordination (Class 10 · CBSE Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.
medium · Subjective · Q-34F9F7
How does the plant hormone auxin cause a shoot to bend towards a unidirectional source of light?
Answer: When sunlight falls from one side, auxin diffuses towards the shady side of the shoot tip. Higher concentration of auxin on the shaded side stimulates cells to grow longer than those on the sunny side, causing the shoot to bend towards the light.
Solution
Auxin promotes cell elongation. Its unequal distribution due to light stimulus leads to differential growth rates on the two sides of the stem, resulting in bending.
