Practice question from Geography: Water Resources (Class 10 · CBSE Social Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.
medium · Subjective · Q-441867
Explain any three major causes of water scarcity in India, even in areas that receive considerable rainfall.
Answer: Water scarcity is caused by rapid population growth and the rising demand for domestic water, agriculture and industries. Intensive irrigation and the overuse of groundwater lower the water table, while urbanisation and industrialisation pollute available water sources. Unequal rainfall and seasonal variations also make water unavailable in sufficient quantities throughout the year.
Solution
A complete answer should connect water scarcity with increasing demand, over-exploitation, pollution and the uneven or seasonal distribution of rainfall.
