Find the value of kk for which the system of equations kx+3y=k−3kx + 3y = k - 3 and 12x+ky=k12x + ky = k has no solution.

  1. A.6
  2. B.-6Correct answer
  3. C.0
  4. D.3

Solution

For no solution, the condition is a1a2=b1b2≠c1c2\frac{a_1}{a_2} = \frac{b_1}{b_2} \neq \frac{c_1}{c_2}. Here, k12=3k  ⟹  k2=36  ⟹  k=±6\frac{k}{12} = \frac{3}{k} \implies k^2 = 36 \implies k = \pm 6. Checking the constant ratio: for k=6k = 6, c1c2=6−36=36=12\frac{c_1}{c_2} = \frac{6-3}{6} = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{1}{2}, while a1a2=612=12\frac{a_1}{a_2} = \frac{6}{12} = \frac{1}{2}, which leads to infinitely many solutions. For k=−6k = -6, c1c2=−6−3−6=−9−6=32\frac{c_1}{c_2} = \frac{-6-3}{-6} = \frac{-9}{-6} = \frac{3}{2}, whereas a1a2=−612=−12\frac{a_1}{a_2} = \frac{-6}{12} = -\frac{1}{2} (not equal), giving no solution. Thus, k=−6k = -6.
