What is the oxidation state of sulfur in H2SO5 (Caro's acid)?

  1. A.+8
  2. B.+6Correct answer
  3. C.+7
  4. D.+4

Solution

Caro's acid (H2SO5) contains aperoxide linkage. The structure is HO-SO2-O-OH. Let the oxidation state of S be xx. Assigning oxidation numbers: H = +1, O (in peroxide) = -1, O (normal) = -2. So, 2(+1)+x+3(−2)+2(−1)=0  ⟹  2+x−6−2=0  ⟹  x−6=0  ⟹  x=+62(+1) + x + 3(-2) + 2(-1) = 0 \implies 2 + x - 6 - 2 = 0 \implies x - 6 = 0 \implies x = +6.
