Practice question from Computer Networks (Class 12 · CBSE · Science Computer Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.

hard · Subjective · Q-7CFA16

Differentiate between circuit switching and packet switching. Also state why packet switching is commonly used on the Internet.

Answer: Circuit switching establishes a dedicated communication path between two endpoints for the entire duration of a session, whereas packet switching divides data into packets that may travel through different routes and share network links with other communications. Packet switching is commonly used on the Internet because it uses bandwidth efficiently, supports many simultaneous users, and can route packets around a failed or congested link.

Solution

Circuit switching reserves a fixed path, which can remain unused during silent periods. Packet switching shares network resources dynamically and can choose alternate routes, making it more suitable for the variable traffic and distributed nature of the Internet.
