Two fair dice are thrown together. What is the probability that the sum is at least 10 or both dice show the same number?

  1. A.5/18Correct answer
  2. B.1/3
  3. C.7/18
  4. D.11/36

Solution

Let AA be the event that the sum is at least 10 and BB the event that both dice show the same number. There are 6 outcomes in AA, 6 in BB, and 2 in A∩BA\cap B, namely (5,5)(5,5) and (6,6)(6,6). Therefore, P(A∪B)=6+6−236=1036=518P(A\cup B)=\frac{6+6-2}{36}=\frac{10}{36}=\frac{5}{18}.
