Two point charges qq and −3q-3q are placed at a distance ll apart on the xx-axis. At what coordinate on the xx-axis (measured from charge qq) is the net electric field zero?

  1. A.l3−1\frac{l}{\sqrt{3}-1} to the left of qqCorrect answer
  2. B.l3+1\frac{l}{\sqrt{3}+1} to the right of qq
  3. C.l3−1\frac{l}{\sqrt{3}-1} to the right of qq
  4. D.l3+1\frac{l}{\sqrt{3}+1} to the left of qq

Solution

Let qq be at x=0x = 0 and −3q-3q at x=lx = l. The net electric field can be zero only in the region where the individual fields oppose each other. Since the charges are of opposite signs, this must lie outside the interval, closer to the smaller magnitude charge (qq), i.e., to the left of qq. Let the distance be xx. Then kqx2=k(3q)(x+l)2  ⟹  (x+l)2=3x2  ⟹  x+l=3x  ⟹  x(3−1)=l  ⟹  x=l3−1\frac{kq}{x^2} = \frac{k(3q)}{(x+l)^2} \implies (x+l)^2 = 3x^2 \implies x+l = \sqrt{3}x \implies x(\sqrt{3}-1) = l \implies x = \frac{l}{\sqrt{3}-1} to the left of qq.
