A bar magnet of magnetic moment MM is cut into two equal pieces transverse to its length. The magnetic moment of each new piece will be:

  1. A.M
  2. B.M/2Correct answer
  3. C.2M
  4. D.M/4

Solution

When a bar magnet is cut transverse to its length, the pole strength remains the same, but its length becomes halved. Since magnetic moment M=m×lM = m \times l, the new magnetic moment becomes M′=m×(l/2)=M/2M' = m \times (l/2) = M/2.
