Distinguish between primary data and secondary data. Give one example of each.
Answer: Primary data are collected first-hand by an investigator for a specific purpose, such as a researcher surveying households about their monthly income. Secondary data are data already collected by another person or organisation for some purpose and later used by the investigator, such as population figures published in a government report.
Solution
Primary data are original data collected directly by the investigator, whereas secondary data are obtained from existing records or publications. The suitability and reliability of secondary data should be checked before use.
