Chapter 3Statistics: Organisation of Data
Raw data → classify → frequency distribution.
1. Classification
- chronological (time)
- spatial (place)
- qualitative (attribute)
- quantitative (variable)
2. Variables
- Continuous: any value in a range (height).
- Discrete: whole numbers only (number of children).
3. Frequency Distribution
- Class interval, class limits, class mark = (lower + upper)/2, class width.
- Exclusive (10–20, 20–30: upper limit excluded) vs inclusive (10–19, 20–29).
- Tally marks to count frequencies.
4. Bivariate Distribution
Frequency table for two variables at once (e.g. sales and advertising).
5. Key Points
- Loss of information after grouping.
- Equal class intervals preferred.
- Adjust inclusive classes for continuity.
- Sum of frequencies = total observations.
Remember: 4 classifications | discrete vs continuous | exclusive vs inclusive
