Class 11 · Chapter 2Motion in a Straight Line
Slope of x–t is velocity; slope of v–t is acceleration; area under v–t is displacement.
1. Basic Terms
- Displacement: change in position (vector); distance is path length (scalar).
- Average velocity ; instantaneous velocity .
- Acceleration .
- Average speed ≥ |average velocity|.
2. Equations of Motion (uniform a)
= distance in the th second.
3. Graphs
| Graph | Slope gives | Area gives |
|---|---|---|
| x–t | velocity | — |
| v–t | acceleration | displacement |
| a–t | — | change in velocity |
4. Free Fall & Relative Velocity
Take (upwards positive). Thrown up with speed :
Relative velocity: .
5. Key Points
- Body thrown up returns with same speed.
- At the top, v = 0 but a = g.
- Galileo: distances in successive seconds from rest are 1 : 3 : 5 : 7.
- Straight x–t line ⇒ uniform velocity.
Remember: 3 equations | slope & area of graphs | free fall a = g
