Practice question from Matter in Our Surroundings (Class 9 · CBSE Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.

medium · Subjective · Q-0B2A08

During the boiling of water, why does the temperature remain constant even though heat is being continuously supplied?

Answer: During boiling, the heat supplied is continuously used up in changing the state of water from liquid to gas by overcoming the forces of attraction between the particles, rather than increasing the kinetic energy. This heat energy is known as the latent heat of vaporization, which keeps the temperature constant until all the liquid has converted into vapor.

Solution

The heat supplied is absorbed as latent heat of vaporization to break intermolecular forces, hence kinetic energy (and thus temperature) does not change.
