easy · MCQ · Q-0C1D37

In a Young's double-slit experiment, the fringe width is found to be 0.4 mm0.4\text{ mm}. If the whole apparatus is immersed in water of refractive index 4/34/3, the new fringe width will be:

  1. A.0.3 mm0.3\text{ mm}Correct answer
  2. B.0.4 mm0.4\text{ mm}
  3. C.0.53 mm0.53\text{ mm}
  4. D.0.75 mm0.75\text{ mm}

Solution

The fringe width β\beta is given by β=λDd\beta = \frac{\lambda D}{d}. When immersed in a medium of refractive index μ\mu, both wavelength and hence the fringe width become β′=βμ\beta' = \frac{\beta}{\mu}. Therefore, β′=0.44/3=0.3 mm\beta' = \frac{0.4}{4/3} = 0.3\text{ mm}.
