medium · MCQ · Q-3486B7

If the sum of the first nn terms of an AP is given by Sn=3n2+5nS_n = 3n^2 + 5n, find its 2nd term.

  1. A.8
  2. B.14Correct answer
  3. C.22
  4. D.10

Solution

The first term a1=S1=3(1)2+5(1)=8a_1 = S_1 = 3(1)^2 + 5(1) = 8. The sum of the first two terms is S2=3(2)2+5(2)=3(4)+10=22S_2 = 3(2)^2 + 5(2) = 3(4) + 10 = 22. The second term a2a_2 is equal to S2−S1=22−8=14S_2 - S_1 = 22 - 8 = 14.
