A projectile is fired with an initial velocity uu at an angle θ\theta with the horizontal. At what angle of projection is the horizontal range equal to four times the maximum height attained by the projectile?

  1. A.30∘30^\circ
  2. B.45∘45^\circCorrect answer
  3. C.60∘60^\circ
  4. D.75∘75^\circ

Solution

The horizontal range is R=u2sin⁡2θgR = \frac{u^2 \sin 2\theta}{g} and maximum height is H=u2sin⁡2θ2gH = \frac{u^2 \sin^2 \theta}{2g}. Given R=4HR = 4H, so u2sin⁡2θg=4(u2sin⁡2θ2g)  ⟹  2sin⁡θcos⁡θ=2sin⁡2θ  ⟹  tan⁡θ=1  ⟹  θ=45∘\frac{u^2 \sin 2\theta}{g} = 4 \left(\frac{u^2 \sin^2 \theta}{2g}\right) \implies 2\sin\theta\cos\theta = 2\sin^2\theta \implies \tan\theta = 1 \implies \theta = 45^\circ.
