A particle is moving in a circle of radius RR with a constant speed vv. What is the magnitude of the average acceleration during a time interval equal to half of the circular path?

  1. A.v2πR\frac{v^2}{\pi R}
  2. B.2v2πR\frac{2v^2}{\pi R}Correct answer
  3. C.4v2πR\frac{4v^2}{\pi R}
  4. D.Zero

Solution

Average acceleration is defined as a⃗avg=Δv⃗Δt\vec{a}_{avg} = \frac{\Delta \vec{v}}{\Delta t}. For half a circle, the initial velocity is v⃗1=vi^\vec{v}_1 = v\hat{i} and final velocity is v⃗2=−vi^\vec{v}_2 = -v\hat{i}. Thus, ∣Δv⃗∣=2v|\Delta \vec{v}| = 2v. The time taken for half a circle is Δt=πRv\Delta t = \frac{\pi R}{v}. Therefore, ∣a⃗avg∣=2vπR/v=2v2πR|\vec{a}_{avg}| = \frac{2v}{\pi R / v} = \frac{2v^2}{\pi R}.
