medium · MCQ · Q-55300A

A sound wave of frequency ff travels in air with speed vv. If the temperature of air increases, how do the frequency and wavelength of the sound wave change?

  1. A.Frequency remains constant, wavelength increases.Correct answer
  2. B.Frequency increases, wavelength remains constant.
  3. C.Both frequency and wavelength increase.
  4. D.Frequency remains constant, wavelength decreases.

Solution

The frequency of a sound wave is determined solely by the source and does not change when the medium's temperature changes. The speed of sound in air increases with temperature (v∝Tv \propto \sqrt{T}). From the relation v=fλv = f\lambda, since vv increases and ff remains constant, the wavelength λ\lambda must increase.
