medium · MCQ · Q-601B20

If the distance between the points (x,−1)(x, -1) and (3,2)(3, 2) is 55 units, find the positive value of xx.

  1. A.77Correct answer
  2. B.−1-1
  3. C.33
  4. D.55

Solution

Using the distance formula, (3−x)2+(2−(−1))2=5\sqrt{(3 - x)^2 + (2 - (-1))^2} = 5. Squaring both sides: (3−x)2+32=25  ⟹  (3−x)2+9=25  ⟹  (3−x)2=16(3 - x)^2 + 3^2 = 25 \implies (3 - x)^2 + 9 = 25 \implies (3 - x)^2 = 16. Taking square roots: 3−x=±43 - x = \pm 4. If 3−x=43 - x = 4, then x=−1x = -1. If 3−x=−43 - x = -4, then x=7x = 7. The positive value is 77.
