medium · MCQ · Q-C18CC6

Find the coordinates of the point which divides the join of (−1,7)(-1, 7) and (4,−3)(4, -3) in the ratio 2:32:3.

  1. A.(1,3)(1, 3)Correct answer
  2. B.(2,2)(2, 2)
  3. C.(−1,3)(-1, 3)
  4. D.(3,5)(3, 5)

Solution

Using the section formula (m1x2+m2x1m1+m2,m1y2+m2y1m1+m2)\left(\frac{m_1x_2 + m_2x_1}{m_1 + m_2}, \frac{m_1y_2 + m_2y_1}{m_1 + m_2}\right) with m1:m2=2:3m_1:m_2 = 2:3, (x1,y1)=(−1,7)(x_1, y_1) = (-1, 7), and (x2,y2)=(4,−3)(x_2, y_2) = (4, -3), we get x=2(4)+3(−1)2+3=8−35=1x = \frac{2(4) + 3(-1)}{2+3} = \frac{8 - 3}{5} = 1 and y=2(−3)+3(7)2+3=−6+215=3y = \frac{2(-3) + 3(7)}{2+3} = \frac{-6 + 21}{5} = 3. Thus, the point is (1,3)(1, 3).
