A particle executes simple harmonic motion with an amplitude AA and time period TT. The displacement of the particle when its speed is half of its maximum speed is:

  1. A.A/2
  2. B.\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} ACorrect answer
  3. C.A/\sqrt{2}
  4. D.\frac{A}{\sqrt{3}}

Solution

The speed of a particle in SHM is given by v=ωA2−x2v = \omega \sqrt{A^2 - x^2}. Maximum speed is vmax=ωAv_{max} = \omega A. Given v=vmax/2v = v_{max}/2, we get ωA2−x2=12ωA  ⟹  A2−x2=A24  ⟹  x2=34A2  ⟹  x=32A\omega \sqrt{A^2 - x^2} = \frac{1}{2}\omega A \implies A^2 - x^2 = \frac{A^2}{4} \implies x^2 = \frac{3}{4}A^2 \implies x = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}A.
