Practice question from Some Applications of Trigonometry (Class 10 · CBSE Mathematics), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.

easy · MCQ · Q-7ABF78

If the ratio of the height of a tower and the length of its shadow on the ground is 3:1\sqrt{3} : 1, then the angle of elevation of the sun is:

  1. A.30∘30^\circ
  2. B.45∘45^\circ
  3. C.60∘60^\circCorrect answer
  4. D.90∘90^\circ

Solution

Let height be hh and shadow length be ss. We are given hs=31\frac{h}{s} = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{1}. The angle of elevation θ\theta satisfies tan⁡θ=hs=3\tan \theta = \frac{h}{s} = \sqrt{3}. Since tan⁡(60∘)=3\tan(60^\circ) = \sqrt{3}, the angle is 60∘60^\circ.
