If the height of a tower and the distance of the point of observation from its foot are both increased by 10%, then the angle of elevation of the top of the tower viewed from that point:

  1. A.Increases by 10%
  2. B.Decreases by 10%
  3. C.Remains unchangedCorrect answer
  4. D.Becomes doubled

Solution

Let the initial height be hh and the initial distance be xx. The angle of elevation θ\theta is given by tan⁡θ=hx\tan \theta = \frac{h}{x}. When both are increased by 10%, the new height is 1.1h1.1h and the new distance is 1.1x1.1x. The new angle θ′\theta' satisfies tan⁡θ′=1.1h1.1x=hx=tan⁡θ\tan \theta' = \frac{1.1h}{1.1x} = \frac{h}{x} = \tan \theta. Therefore, the angle remains unchanged.
