Which of the following reagents can be used to distinguish between benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde?

  1. A.Tollens' reagent
  2. B.Fehling's solution
  3. C.Iodine and sodium hydroxideCorrect answer
  4. D.2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine

Solution

Acetaldehyde contains a CH3−CO−CH_3-CO- group and thus gives a positive iodoform test with I2/NaOHI_2/NaOH, whereas benzaldehyde does not. Both give positive Tollens' tests and 2,4-DNP tests, and neither gives a positive Fehling's test.
