A small spherical ball of radius rr and density ρ\rho falls freely under gravity through a height hh before entering a tank of water (density σ\sigma, viscosity η\eta). If the ball does not lose any kinetic energy upon entering the water, the maximum depth to which it sinks inside the water is given by (neglect buoyant force during entry, assume terminal velocity is not reached quickly):

  1. A.h(ρ−σ)σ\frac{h(\rho - \sigma)}{\sigma}
  2. B.hρσ−ρ\frac{h\rho}{\sigma - \rho}
  3. C.hρρ−σ\frac{h\rho}{\rho - \sigma}Correct answer
  4. D.h(ρ−σ)ρ\frac{h(\rho - \sigma)}{\rho}

Solution

Mass of the ball m=43πr3ρm = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 \rho. Initial kinetic energy just as it enters water is K=mgh=43πr3ρghK = mgh = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 \rho g h. The net upward force on the ball submerged at depth HH is (Buoyant−Weight)=43πr3σg−43πr3ρg=43πr3g(σ−ρ)(Buoyant - Weight) = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 \sigma g - \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 \rho g = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 g (\sigma - \rho). Work done against net upward force brings the ball to rest: W=(43πr3g(ρ−σ))H=K=43πr3ρghW = \left(\frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 g (\rho - \sigma)\right) H = K = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 \rho g h. Cancelling terms gives H(ρ−σ)=ρh  ⟹  H=hρρ−σH(\rho - \sigma) = \rho h \implies H = \frac{h\rho}{\rho - \sigma}.
