Which of the following amino acids is strictly ketogenic and cannot serve as a substrate for net hepatic gluconeogenesis?
- A.Alanine
- B.Aspartate
- C.LeucineCorrect answer
- D.Valine
Solution
Leucine and lysine are the only two strictly ketogenic amino acids in humans. Their catabolism yields acetyl-CoA or acetoacetyl-CoA, which cannot be converted into pyruvate or oxaloacetate for net gluconeogenesis. All other amino acids are either purely glucogenic or both glucogenic and ketogenic.
