hard · MCQ · Q-9BBA28
During a radical neck dissection for advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, a surgeon accidentally injures a nerve that lies immediately deep to the posterior belly of the digastric muscle and runs across the superior constrictor muscle, accompanying the stylopharyngeus. Which of the following muscles is paralyzed as a direct result of this nerve injury?
- A.StylopharyngeusCorrect answer
- B.Tensor veli palatini
- C.Palatopharyngeus
- D.Styloglossus
Solution
The glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) supplies the stylopharyngeus muscle. CN IX exits the skull via the jugular foramen, passes deep to the styloid process and its muscles, runs between the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein, and hooks around the lateral border of the stylopharyngeus muscle to enter the pharynx between the superior and middle constrictors.
