Practice question from Electricity (Class 10 · CBSE Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.

hard · MCQ · Q-A64C97

A wire of resistance RR is stretched until its length is doubled while its volume remains constant. What is the new resistance of the wire?

  1. A.2R
  2. B.4RCorrect answer
  3. C.R / 2
  4. D.R / 4

Solution

Resistance is given by R=ρlAR = \rho \frac{l}{A}. When the wire is stretched to double its length (l′=2ll' = 2l) with volume remaining constant, its cross-sectional area decreases to half (A′=A/2A' = A / 2). The new resistance is R′=ρ2lA/2=4(ρlA)=4RR' = \rho \frac{2l}{A/2} = 4 \left(\rho \frac{l}{A}\right) = 4R.
