Practice question from Electricity (Class 10 · CBSE Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.

hard · MCQ · Q-CE4256

An electric bulb is rated 220 V220\text{ V} and 100 W100\text{ W}. When it is operated on 110 V110\text{ V}, what is the power consumed by the bulb?

  1. A.100 W
  2. B.50 W
  3. C.25 WCorrect answer
  4. D.200 W

Solution

The resistance of the bulb remains constant and can be calculated using R=V2P=2202100=484 ΩR = \frac{V^2}{P} = \frac{220^2}{100} = 484\ \Omega. When operated at V′=110 VV' = 110\text{ V}, the new power consumed is P′=(V′)2R=1102484=12100484=25 WP' = \frac{(V')^2}{R} = \frac{110^2}{484} = \frac{12100}{484} = 25\text{ W}.
