What is the ratio of the frequency of revolution of an electron in the n=2n=2 Bohr orbit to that in the n=1n=1 Bohr orbit of a hydrogen atom?

  1. A.1:41:4
  2. B.1:81:8Correct answer
  3. C.8:18:1
  4. D.4:14:1

Solution

The frequency of revolution ff is given by f=v2πrf = \frac{v}{2\pi r}. Since v∝1nv \propto \frac{1}{n} and r∝n2r \propto n^2, we get f∝1n3f \propto \frac{1}{n^3}. Therefore, f2f1=(12)3=18\frac{f_2}{f_1} = \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^3 = \frac{1}{8}.
