If two positive integers pp and qq can be expressed as p=ab2p = ab^2 and q=a3bq = a^3b, where a,ba, b are prime numbers, then what is the LCM(p,qp, q)?

  1. A.abab
  2. B.a2b2a^2b^2
  3. C.a3b2a^3b^2Correct answer
  4. D.a3b3a^3b^3

Solution

The LCM of two numbers given in prime factorized form is the product of the greatest power of each prime factor involved. For p=a1b2p = a^1b^2 and q=a3b1q = a^3b^1, the greatest power of aa is a3a^3 and of bb is b2b^2. Thus, LCM(p,q)=a3b2\text{LCM}(p, q) = a^3b^2.
