Practice question from Geography: Agriculture (Class 10 · CBSE Social Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.
easy · Subjective · Q-F8E04B
Why does Indian agriculture remain highly dependent on the monsoon, and what is one consequence of an uncertain monsoon?
Answer: A large part of Indian farmland still lacks assured irrigation, so farmers depend on monsoon rainfall for sowing and crop growth. An irregular or delayed monsoon can cause drought, reduce crop production and increase the risk of loss for farmers.
Solution
Although irrigation has expanded, much cultivated land is still rain-fed. Therefore, variations in the timing and amount of monsoon rainfall can directly affect agricultural output and farmers' incomes.
