easy · MCQ · Q-FDE780

If the equilibrium constant for the reaction N2(g)+O2(g)⇌2NO(g)N_2(g) + O_2(g) \rightleftharpoons 2NO(g) is KK, the equilibrium constant for the reaction NO(g)⇌12N2(g)+12O2(g)NO(g) \rightleftharpoons \frac{1}{2}N_2(g) + \frac{1}{2}O_2(g) will be:

  1. A.1/K
  2. B.K^2
  3. C.1/\sqrt{K}Correct answer
  4. D.\sqrt{K}

Solution

The equilibrium constant for the first reaction is K=[NO]2[N2][O2]K = \frac{[NO]^2}{[N_2][O_2]}. The reverse reaction has a constant of 1/K1/K. When the reaction is multiplied by 1/21/2, the equilibrium constant becomes the square root of the previous one, thus 1/K=1/K\sqrt{1/K} = 1/\sqrt{K}.
