A Carnot engine has an efficiency of 50%50\% when its sink is at 300 K300\text{ K}. If the efficiency is to be increased to 70%70\% keeping the source temperature constant, the temperature of the sink must be decreased by:

  1. A.120 K120\text{ K}Correct answer
  2. B.180 K180\text{ K}
  3. C.60 K60\text{ K}
  4. D.200 K200\text{ K}

Solution

Initial efficiency η1=1−T2T1  ⟹  0.5=1−300T1  ⟹  300T1=0.5  ⟹  T1=600 K\eta_1 = 1 - \frac{T_2}{T_1} \implies 0.5 = 1 - \frac{300}{T_1} \implies \frac{300}{T_1} = 0.5 \implies T_1 = 600\text{ K}. New efficiency η2=0.7\eta_2 = 0.7, source temperature T1=600 KT_1 = 600\text{ K}, let new sink temperature be T2′T_2'. Then 0.7=1−T2′600  ⟹  T2′600=0.3  ⟹  T2′=180 K0.7 = 1 - \frac{T_2'}{600} \implies \frac{T_2'}{600} = 0.3 \implies T_2' = 180\text{ K}. Decrease in sink temperature = 300−180=120 K300 - 180 = 120\text{ K}.
