During an adiabatic process, the pressure of a gas is found to be proportional to the cube of its absolute temperature (P∝T3P \propto T^3). The ratio of specific heats γ=CpCv\gamma = \frac{C_p}{C_v} for the gas is:

  1. A.3/23/2Correct answer
  2. B.4/34/3
  3. C.5/35/3
  4. D.3/13/1

Solution

For an adiabatic process, the relation between pressure and temperature is given by P1−γTγ=constantP^{1-\gamma} T^\gamma = \text{constant}, which implies PTγ1−γ=constantP T^{\frac{\gamma}{1-\gamma}} = \text{constant}. Comparing with P∝T3P \propto T^3, we get γ1−γ=3\frac{\gamma}{1-\gamma} = 3. Solving for γ\gamma: γ=3−3γ  ⟹  4γ=3  ⟹  γ=3/2\gamma = 3 - 3\gamma \implies 4\gamma = 3 \implies \gamma = 3/2.
