A uniform wire of resistance RR is stretched uniformly to double its original length. The new resistance of the wire will be:

  1. A.2R
  2. B.4RCorrect answer
  3. C.R/2
  4. D.R/4

Solution

When a wire is stretched without changing its mass, its volume remains constant. Since R=ρlA=ρl2VR = \rho \frac{l}{A} = \rho \frac{l^2}{V}, the resistance is directly proportional to the square of the length (R∝l2R \propto l^2). If length is doubled, resistance becomes 22=42^2 = 4 times the original value.
