Practice question from Conic Sections (JEE Preparation Mathematics), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.

medium · Subjective · Q-B0188F

An ellipse has its foci at (-4, 0) and (4, 0), and its major axis has length 10. Find its equation.

Answer: The semi-major axis is a = 10/2 = 5 and the focal distance is c = 4. Thus, b^2 = a^2 - c^2 = 25 - 16 = 9, so the equation of the ellipse is x^2/25 + y^2/9 = 1.

Solution

The centre is the midpoint of the foci, namely (0,0)(0,0). Since a=5a=5 and c=4c=4, we get b2=a2−c2=9b^2=a^2-c^2=9; therefore, the ellipse is x225+y29=1\frac{x^2}{25}+\frac{y^2}{9}=1.
