The gradual decrease in atomic and ionic radii along the lanthanoid series is known as lanthanoid contraction. This is primarily due to:
- A.Poor shielding of electronsCorrect answer
- B.Effective shielding of electrons
- C.Increasing nuclear charge being nullified by electrons
- D.Decreasing nuclear charge along the series
Solution
As we move along the lanthanoid series, nuclear charge increases by one at each step, while the incoming electron enters the orbital. Due to the very poor shielding effect of electrons, the effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer electrons increases, pulling the electron cloud closer and causing lanthanoid contraction.
