Write a note on: The role of women in nationalist struggles

Answer: Women participated in large numbers in nationalist movements, forming their own political associations, founding newspapers and taking part in political meetings and demonstrations. Despite this, they were given a subordinate position. When the Frankfurt Parliament was convened in the Church of St. Paul, women were admitted only as observers to stand in the visitors' gallery. In visual representation, however, the nation was often personified as a female figure such as Marianne or Germania - yet this female allegory did not stand for any real woman; women in real life were denied political rights, including the right to vote. Women continued to struggle for equal political rights over the following decades.

Solution

Active participation but subordinate status - contrast the female allegory of the nation with women's actual lack of voting rights.
