Practice question from History: The Rise of Nationalism in Europe (Class 10 · CBSE Social Science), with the correct answer and a step-by-step solution.
easy · Subjective · Q-55624E
Write a note on: Giuseppe Mazzini
Answer: Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian revolutionary born in Genoa in 1807. He became a member of the secret society of the Carbonari and was sent into exile in 1831 for attempting a revolution in Liguria. He founded two underground societies - Young Italy in Marseilles and Young Europe in Berne - whose members were like-minded young men from Poland, France, Italy and the German states. Mazzini believed that God had intended nations to be the natural units of mankind, so Italy could not continue as a patchwork of small states and kingdoms but had to be forged into a single unified republic. He opposed monarchy and believed in a democratic republic. His relentless opposition to monarchy frightened the conservatives, and Metternich described him as 'the most dangerous enemy of our social order.'
Solution
Think of the Italian revolutionary who founded Young Italy and Young Europe and dreamed of a unified Italian republic.
