A circular coil of radius RR and NN turns carries a current II. The magnetic field at its center is BB. At what distance from the center along the axis of the coil will the magnetic field be B/8B/8?

  1. A.3R\sqrt{3}RCorrect answer
  2. B.2R\sqrt{2}R
  3. C.2R2R
  4. D.3R3R

Solution

The magnetic field on the axis of a circular coil at distance xx is Bx=μ0NIR22(R2+x2)3/2B_x = \frac{\mu_0 NIR^2}{2(R^2 + x^2)^{3/2}}. At the center (x=0x=0), B=μ0NI2RB = \frac{\mu_0 NI}{2R}. Given Bx=B/8B_x = B/8, so R3(R2+x2)3/2=18  ⟹  RR2+x2=12  ⟹  R2+x2=4R2  ⟹  x=3R\frac{R^3}{(R^2 + x^2)^{3/2}} = \frac{1}{8} \implies \frac{R}{\sqrt{R^2 + x^2}} = \frac{1}{2} \implies R^2 + x^2 = 4R^2 \implies x = \sqrt{3}R.
