easy · MCQ · Q-A7A757

Which of the following immunosuppressive agents acts primarily by inhibiting calcineurin, thereby preventing the dephosphorylation and nuclear translocation of the nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT)?

  1. A.Sirolimus
  2. B.TacrolimusCorrect answer
  3. C.Mycophenolate mofetil
  4. D.Basiliximab

Solution

Tacrolimus and cyclosporine are calcineurin inhibitors. They bind to immunophilins (FKBP and cyclophilin, respectively) and inhibit calcineurin phosphatase activity, blocking NFAT activation and subsequent IL-2 transcription. Sirolimus inhibits mTOR. Mycophenolate inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase. Basiliximab is an anti-IL-2 receptor monoclonal antibody.
