Chapter 4Animal Kingdom
Porifera → Cnidaria → Ctenophora → Platyhelminthes → Aschelminthes → Annelida → Arthropoda → Mollusca → Echinodermata → Hemichordata → Chordata.
1. Basis of Classification
- Organisation: cellular → tissue → organ → organ system.
- Symmetry: asymmetrical, radial, bilateral.
- Germ layers: diploblastic, triploblastic.
- Coelom: acoelomate, pseudocoelomate, coelomate.
- Segmentation (metamerism); notochord.
2. Non-chordate Phyla
| Phylum | Key feature | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Porifera | canal system, choanocytes | Sycon, Spongilla |
| Cnidaria | cnidoblasts, polyp/medusa | Hydra, Aurelia |
| Ctenophora | comb plates, bioluminescence | Pleurobrachia |
| Platyhelminthes | flat, flame cells | Taenia, Fasciola |
| Aschelminthes | round, pseudocoelom | Ascaris |
| Annelida | segmented, nephridia | Pheretima, Hirudinaria |
| Arthropoda | jointed legs, chitin (largest phylum) | insects, Limulus |
| Mollusca | mantle, radula | Pila, Octopus |
| Echinodermata | water vascular system, spiny skin | Asterias |
| Hemichordata | proboscis, stomochord | Balanoglossus |
3. Chordata
Notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal gill slits, post-anal tail.
| Class | Feature | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Cyclostomata | jawless, sucking mouth | Petromyzon |
| Chondrichthyes | cartilaginous skeleton | Scoliodon (shark) |
| Osteichthyes | bony skeleton, air bladder | Labeo, Hippocampus |
| Amphibia | moist skin, 3-chambered heart | frog, Salamandra |
| Reptilia | scales, mostly 3-chambered heart | Chelone, Naja |
| Aves | feathers, pneumatic bones, 4-chambered heart | Corvus, Pavo |
| Mammalia | mammary glands, hair, pinna | Homo, Pteropus |
4. Key Points
- Crocodile has a 4-chambered heart.
- Birds and mammals are homoiothermous.
- Platypus lays eggs (oviparous mammal).
- Sponges reproduce by gemmules too.
Remember: Body plan basis | 11 phyla table | 7 vertebrate classes
