Chapter 1The Living World
Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species: “King Philip Came Over For Good Soup”.
1. What is Living?
- Defining features: metabolism, cellular organisation, consciousness (response to stimuli).
- Growth and reproduction are not defining (crystals grow; mules don't reproduce).
2. Binomial Nomenclature
- Given by Carolus Linnaeus: Genus (capital) + species epithet (small).
- Printed in italics; underlined separately when handwritten.
- Example: Mangifera indica Linn.
Codes: ICBN (plants), ICZN (animals).
3. Taxonomic Hierarchy
| Rank | Human | Mango |
|---|---|---|
| Kingdom | Animalia | Plantae |
| Phylum / Division | Chordata | Angiospermae |
| Class | Mammalia | Dicotyledonae |
| Order | Primata | Sapindales |
| Family | Hominidae | Anacardiaceae |
| Genus | Homo | Mangifera |
| Species | sapiens | indica |
4. Taxonomic Aids
Herbarium
Dried, pressed, preserved plant specimens on sheets.
Botanical garden
Living plants (e.g. Kew, Indian Botanical Garden Howrah).
Museum
Preserved specimens in jars, stuffed animals.
Key
Contrasting couplets (leads) used for identification.
Also: zoological parks, flora, manuals, monographs, catalogues.
5. Key Points
- Species is the basic unit of classification.
- Taxonomy = identification, nomenclature, classification.
- Systematics also covers evolutionary relationships.
- Higher rank ⇒ fewer common features.
Remember: Metabolism defines life | binomial rules | 7 ranks
