Chapter 12Respiration in Plants
Glycolysis (cytoplasm) → Krebs (matrix) → ETS (inner membrane).
1. Glycolysis (EMP)
- Glucose → 2 pyruvate in the cytoplasm.
- Net 2 ATP + 2 NADH.
- Common to aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
2. Fermentation
- Yeast: pyruvate → ethanol + CO₂.
- Muscle: pyruvate → lactic acid.
- Less than 7% of glucose energy is released.
3. Aerobic Respiration
| Stage | Where | Products per glucose |
|---|---|---|
| Link reaction | matrix | 2 acetyl CoA, 2 NADH, 2 CO₂ |
| Krebs (TCA) cycle | matrix | 6 NADH, 2 FADH₂, 2 ATP, 4 CO₂ |
| ETS + oxidative phosphorylation | inner membrane | ATP from NADH/FADH₂; O₂ → H₂O |
Net yield ~38 ATP per glucose (textbook value); 1 NADH ≈ 3 ATP, 1 FADH₂ ≈ 2 ATP.
4. Respiratory Quotient
RQ = CO₂ evolved / O₂ consumed.
| Substrate | RQ |
|---|---|
| Carbohydrate | 1 |
| Fat | < 1 (≈0.7) |
| Protein | ≈ 0.9 |
| Organic acids | 1 |
5. Key Points
- Respiration is amphibolic.
- O₂ is the final electron acceptor.
- Citrate is the first Krebs product.
- ATP synthase = complex V.
Remember: Glycolysis → Krebs → ETS | 38 ATP | RQ values
